Ok, When I checked the timing at idle with the embossed mark aligned with the cam follower, The timing was well below 4 deg BTDC. As a matter of fact it was below the TDC mark. I don't think this is a good thing when a spark occurs after TDC. Could this cause popping through exhaust at idle? When I advance the timing at the arm leading to timer base unit the popping stops. Not sure if this is correct, but the thing is running much better.

At idle the throttle plates are closed.--RPM is controlled by retarding the timing.---The more retarded it is the better !

I know it's been a whilebut here's an update. Finally got out to check max advance. 28 Deg as near as I could tell. Boat is running great, no popping, good acceleration and idle is steady. Thanks for all the input.
