I am having trouble with my Johnson OB. I am having intermitent spark, and the engine is only running on 3 cylinders. I rebuilt the carbs, new spark plugs, fresh gas. The boat ran well for 5 minutes on all cylinders, then no spark. Currently still no spark. Compression test shows range from 90 to 130. One cyl has 130, 3 have 90, 2 have 100. The motor has always had bad compression, and like I said, the motor ran with this bad compression for 5 minutes until spark was lost. Do I need a power pack? If so, how much would this be? How much would this motor be worth in the condition it's in, as is? how much would this motor be worth if it is running on all four? Nay help would be appreciated.

Mike, eliminate the shift switch first. It's a momentary switch, stbd side, by the shft linkage connection from the controls. Disconnect the 2-wire plug and see if she runs on all six. You have a single powerpack split into odd/even cyls internally. Factory manual has troubleshootin guide for all ignition components to narrow down the culprit. You may also be going into SLOW mode because of overheat condition and your horn is not sounding. Powerpack runs $300-$350 US. Motor is worth alot more running on all six, so let us help you get it purring, then you can decide if you want to sell. Check shift switch, get a factory manual, and we'll go from there if you like!
Good luck!

I will check the motor tomorrow with the shift switch eliminated. Thanks, I'm at my wits end here.

Check your kill switch first!! On 1993 engines, shift interrupter only controls starboard side of pack. Make sure you have the correct plugs QL78YC installed. Check the encoder wheel as I have seen the window slots broken. Remove and clean the sensor eye with denatured alchol and Q-tip. If this fails to correct problem you have a bad sensor, stator or pack.

Does anyone know where I can downloas a free copy of a service manual for this motor? I was able to download a manual for my mercruiser, and I thought, how convenient would it be to be able to do the same thing for this one too?
