looking to purchase a 18' cc with a 93 120hp johnson v4.. I plan on doing a comp.test this week..I was reading that it should be around 100psi with 10psi +/-, took it out today and it ran great, top speed was around 35mph. The motor did put out some smoke when started and sitting in idle..just seemed more than normal.. hopefully all the cyl. have good comp. and that it is just running rich..

How are these motors? Didnt really want to buy a 93 motor but its a great boat and is super clean..also how are they on gas? If anyone can give some infoon owning one of these it would be helpful..

Most of the V-4 series motors are great. They will run with 70 lbs of compression but normally are about 110 or better. The primary concern is that they are all w/in 10% and you should be good. Yes they tend to smoke more at an idle since the fumes are with you and you are not driving away from them.

I would check compression, ask about the water pump, look for dis-colored heads and evidence the bolts have been removed. Removed head bolts are okay..... dis-colored usually means it overheated.

Look at the prop and skeg and see if they look abused ;)

The 93 should be a 90 degree block and a looper design....great power and economy on par with 120 hp motors.

If you purchase the motor the first thing I would do is a de-carbonization and run some sea foam through it. It is the cheapest best thing you can do to an unknown 2 stroke.

The next step is to order the proper repair manual from here http://www.outboardbooks.com/ I would not even think about a clymer or seloc manual ;)
