I am working on a friends MERCURY 115 that runs and idles poorly.
The engine has a hard time building revs and at
times dies at speed.
After 600 dollars at the local dealer the engine
still runs the same.
My question , is the engine supposed to idle on
2 cylinders and then kick in on all 4 when you
take off? This is what the dealer told us.
I think it has dirt in the carbs.
ANY OPINIONS?

Welcome to iboats.

Yup! That's what they do. The salesman that sold the boat should've explained that. Below 1800 RPMs, it runs on the top two cylinders. Above 2200 RPMs it runs on all four. The usual complaint usually involves the RPMs in between. The motor can't seem to decide whether to run on 2, 3, or 4. That's where most boats just plow thruogh the water. Not yet on plane, not really settled down in the water. Most people don't run their boats there. There's two speeds in boating. Slow No Wake and Wide Open Throttle. That motor likes those speeds.

My opiniion? You couldn't pay me to take it off your hands.

Don't let Willy scare you off. The motor never runs on 3 cylinders. At about 1800-2000 RPM's the bottom 2 carbs begin to provide enough fuel to promote combustion. Those are great motors if set-up and propped correctly. I have a 97 125 2+2 and it runs perfectly. The key is syncronization of the carbs. If you dealer isn't up to speed on the procedure, that's where you problem is. Also, when is the last time it was decarbed? If your friend spent 600 bucks with no improvement, I would either be getting my money back or have him keep it until he gets it fixed. What did the 600 bucks cover?? Be sure to rule out bad gas and water in fuel. Use the red "search" icon at the top of this page and do a search for "2+2" for more info on this motor. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Gentleman,
Thank you for your replys.
We took the boat back to the dealer and
they spent some time adjusting the carbs and sync.
Boat runs MUCH better and was no charge (the second time)
CHRIS....
