Re: 1994 140hp

Basically it's a very powerful V4. Taken care of properly it won't matter if it's been in saltwater or not. Improperly cared for, maintained and set up it could require a lot of work. Saltwater or not.

Just check the basics -- compression, lower unit oil, overall condition etc. Pay attention to how it idles on the test run. Check out top rpm's. And make sure they've been running Champion plugs.

Thanks for the info. This is a one owner boat and I'm told it was only used weekends 6 months out of the year, looks like the boat and motor were maintained well. What should the top rpm's be?

At least 5800 with an average load. Closer to 6000 is better.

Re: 1994 140hp

I went down and looked at the boat. The motor looked clean, we put ear muffs on tured on the hose and it started right up.It did smoke a little at first but it went away after it ran a while. He had Champion spark plugs in it. I also called the mechanic that recently worked on it to fix a shifting problem. They told me the compression on all cylinders was 135 and they did not see anything wrong with it.I can get the boat(1994 20 foot Sunbird Neptune center console)the motor and aluminum trailer for $6500.00
The owner used it for slow speed trolling, is that bad for wear and tear on the motor?

Low speed and trolling wont hurt anything. I'd want to see a compression test done, rather than take someones guess at what it is.

If it looks that good and you verify the compression test, that doesn't sound like a horrible deal.
