1994 225 studders at high RPM

I have a 1994 Oceanpro that has been giving me fits recently. New fuel tanks, new fuel lines, new racor (emptied it out just to check and it was clean) dumped the float bowls first and there was no water in there either. The flywheel has been replaced and the magnets are in good shape.

I have cleaned/rebuilt the carbs a couple times (most recently this evening) Also took a look at the plugs at the same time. The plugs were black, with no white residue on them, they all looked to be the same. I had run a TON of oil through this thing, so I plan to clean them, regap for the next test run.

Here is the major issue recently. The last time out (yesterday) the boat ran fine for about 30 seconds then over 4000rpm it would studder, the more RPM, the worse it gets. It will idle fine out of gear, but as we limped back to the dock it got worse in gear, by the time we got to the trailer is was studdering just over 1000rpm.

Ill know more tomorrow, now that the carbs have been cleaned out and the plugs cleaned off. Are there any other tests I can do to the ignition system, etc am I missing something?

Sparkie is right, either compression or spark. The way you describe it it sounds like spark. When something gets hot, it start failing. As the hotter it gets, the worst it gets.

Prime things to look for in order, spark plug wires, coils, wires from power pack, power packs, voltage regulator, timer base, trigger. And all connections in between. Might be, hopefully, a grounded wrie or short, worst electrical componet.

Now you say you limped back to dock, was this in slow mode, or you controlling the throttle? If in slow mode, then it could be overheat problem....

Also you have a tach on your boat? If so does it work?

I limped it back to the dock, it wouldn't run smooth over 1000rpm. I do have a tach, and it works. It did bounce around when I first started it (notice it because it doesn't normally do that) but then it worked fine. I don't believe its compression, because 2 test runs ago it ran ok. In my mind its more and more looking like ignition. Its charging at 13+VT on the gauge, how do you test the voltage reg?

I used a different logic on my motor rebuild. I replaced everything other than the timer base. My thinking was this, If the motor is over 20 years old, then it's done its job and ready to fail. So replace them all. Seeing these motors are known for ignition system failures, Ie the stator and regulators. Then I was going to start out with new and worry about it in a couple of years, around the 200-500 hr mark. If not it's only a matter of time. Are you keeping it or just using it till it goes????

Where I go fishing, the waves are big and shore can not be seen from the boat most days.....
