1994 60HP Troubleshooting leaks and beeps

I've spent a few days reading many of the posts and have found great info. I'd like to share my current problems and hope someone has ideas. Seem to be common issues on Merc's.

'94 60HP serial# OD296792

-Motor runs fine, but leaks oil pretty good somwhere past where the tank line runs into the pump assembly. I've run it and checked all over, but besides the pool of oil in the base of the cowling, I can't really see where it's coming from. Cleaned it up, checked again.. still can't see. The oil tank is new (was replaced by someone else who thought that was the source). Now thinks it's the oil pump itself. Do they leak? Would it be just an o-ring? I can see mixed gas in the outlet of the mixing valve, so I'm sure it's still getting oil...

- After 10- 15 minutes low rpm drives during trolling, the hi-temp steady beep comes on, not always consistent has gone longer withough issue. Any other speed, no problem. I forgot once to open the gas tank vent and heard the alarm chirping for a few minutes while before finally running out of gas. So I'm wondering if it's just the alarm module? What could the chirping have been? Steady stream of water out of the motor. The low RPM has me wondering though....

Hi,

thoses are two unrelated problems: oil pooling inside the cowling usually result from a misplaced or bad seal at the top of the oil tank, under the cap. They tend to leak when fully tilted up.

As for the temp alarm, i'd start by a compression test just to be sure you haven't overheated your engine. After that, follow the proper troubleshooting procedure from the OEM manual for your engine (section 3D):

and, yes, thoses warning modules can and do go bad.

Thanks for the response. Looking at the manuals now. These are great. A huge thank-you.

I just got the boat an it's my first time out on it and first run of the season. I knew about the oil leak. I know the old owner, and they never had any issue with temp alarms last fall.

I've never fully tilted it. Ran it with the cover off starting off clean. Defenitley not leaking from the tank. The tank is clean. I also tried to remove the tank (hose still attached). I can only imagine it's leaking below where I can't see. No oil dripping from any hoses I can see. That's why I wonder if it's possibly leaking directly from the pump itself.

As for the beep... In each case I heard it, I shut the engine immediately. Waited, and started back up. Beep did not return until started trolling again after 15 mins or so.

I wonder if it's an impeller.

Anyway, with any engine of unknown service history, it's always a good practice to change the impeller.

Where are you boating: St. Louis, Two-Mountains or the Larry?

Agreed. Impeller is routine maintenance.
I'm boating in St-Louis, but would like to venture into Two-Mountains at some point soon.

I'll have to poke around a bit more to check what is the cause of the hi-temp alarm.

AS for the oil leak, I'll putt the pump out and look at the o-rings.
I just wonder if at that point I'm better to replace the whole outfit or what. It is mixing. I'd rather fix it than pre-mix at this point, unless it's going to cost big dollars to fix.
