I asked the same question in many places Ralph. In the end, I think it depends where you live. if the water is cold, then thermostat is good. if water is warm (80+) then thermo is not needed. But, frankly, that's just speculation. all I know for sure is that the water down here rarely goes under 80 during my boating season, i removed my thermos, and i am happier without than with. if water fails to spew then there is no question which part is not working (impeller).
