Re: 1994 Evenrude 88 spl" rattling"

This motor is new to me. I don't hear it at home in the tank. I hear it under load and at wot kinda comes and gos. I don't hear it when reving. Its not real loud but a good ear can hear it. I had to explain to my buddy before he heard it. Heck it might be normal, but I have never heard this on any other motor. I'll just keep checking things and if she blows I'll report. I am a little conserned about what marine shop told me earlier in this post about gas. I thought for sure I was hearing detonation from cheap gas old motor. I might start looking for a new shop. So I'm gonna fill with 87gas(10%ethnol-no choice) 50:1 penzoil and seafoam or stabil I don't know which one every fill. Does that sound right.

On my 88 I hear a rattle when pulling the throttle back from high rpm's(5000 down to 2000) to fast(dont do it anymore unless taking an evasive maneuver) . When I ease the throttle back and come off plane its all smooth.

Hi surrender,
How long has yours been doing this? Are you just going to live with it and wait to see?

That engine was designed to run on 87 octane, with up to 10% ethanol. Pretty much what is available in every US gas station. It's your call on adding a fuel stabilizer to each tank. If you buy commercially available gas and use the engine on a regular basis, you may not need this additive. If you buy fuel at the marina, or leave fuel in the tank and don't run the boat for a month or two, I'd add the fuel stabilizer to reduce moisture problems and keep the fuel fresher longer.

I have heard of some dlrs retarding the WOT timing by 2* and increasing the the high speed jet size by .002 " to help eliminate this prob on the cross flows.
