Re: 1994 Force 70, oil inside cowl

Well I got the regulator today and installed it. Tach is working now, but I still don't seem to be charging. I ordered a CDI regulator, and they sent me a Pro Marine one. I wasn't happy, but didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it. It's made the same way as the CDI (even has the extra red wire), but it has a ground wire where the CDI and the original doesn't. I hooked a meter up to the red wire off the regulator, and I have a kind of erratic reading but it does show over 13 volts, sometimes briefly higher. But I'm only showing battery voltage at the battery. I guess I'll do some more testing tomorrow. I had planned to spend the day at the lake, but I don't want to risk burning up a new regulator.

I can't remember the deal with the rectifier/regulator with the two red wires. Why do they have two red wires??? I know when you use that type of rectifier/regulator to replace an 1989 and earlier rectifier only charging system, you tie both reds together and it works fine. Make sure that the ground wire is making good contact with ground. Scrape away any paint to insure good contact.

You aren't likely to see charging voltage at the battery until the rpm are over 2000.

I think it's a multi-fit replacement. When I first hooked it up, the tach still didn't work. I swapped red wires and it did, so I ended up cutting off the connectors and swapping them. I've got the ground wire hooked to the bolt that holds the regulator to the motor.

Had the RPMs over 3k...... well past my comfort zone for it to be on the hose in the yard........

There's a retired marine mechanic that does some work from his home, not far from me. I'm gonna call him and see if he'll take a look at it.

Hooked both red wires together and everything is working as it should.
We'll see how long it takes for the next problem to show up........

I'm sure that eventually you'll have something fail. Good thing is that you will probably be able fix it yourself at minimal cost.

Just imagine what it would have cost to have a certified marine shop trouble-shoot and replace the parts that you just did yourself!
