Hi? pls help me . i took my boat out to the water and we cruised for about two hours. we came to the duck to pick up a friend and we turned the boat off and wait for the friend. when the friend arrive we tried to start boat but the boat the engine refused to start. i check the gas there was alot of gas. the engine cranks or turns but it doesn't fire up or start. i tried to start it with some gas (i mean i push the throttle forward but not gear) but it didn't start it just turns/crank but not start. what could it be? it was embarrasing. so that how i left the water. any ideas will greatly help. pls help. thanks

one more question with a 120 force outboard engine i fast should the boat go. my boat can only travel for 30 mph

thanks

Re: 1995 120 force mercury outboard engine starting problem

This should be in the Force/Chrysler forum since it is NOT a Mercury outboard.

Mods, please move to the correct forum.

Wheres your information coming from? My 1996 120 Force is definitely made by Mercury Marine. Everything Mercury/Mariner related, parts, service manual. Read up on the history of Force and how Mercury took them over to supply engines for the Bayliner, sorta like Mercury did with Mariner. Believe 2004 or 05 was last year of Force by Mercury.

Re: 1995 120 force mercury outboard engine starting problem

YOU need to read up on YOUR history. For one, Mercury didn't take over Mariner. Mercury and Mariner are the same engines, just a different color. Mariner was originally their over seas division. Although Mercury Marine did make the Force when they aquired Bayliner,l that doesn't make them a Mercury engine. They ARE the old Chrysler engine that although Mercury did make some improvements (Like lower unit, electronics and such). It is STILL a Force wich was a re-baged Chrysler, NOTHING more.

YOU NEED TO READ THE BIG LETTERING on your cowling! Then place your question in the matching forum, which is why there is a Force/Chrysler forum AND a Mercury/Mariner. It DOESN"T say Mercury/Mariner/Force

And thank GOD Mercury dropped the line! I know Marine mechanics loved the Force cause it made them a BUNCH of money (As told to me by a machanic).

i have the same motor and had the same problem. my problems were: low on battery, spark plugs coil wasn't on the spark plugs tightly, and i busted the 20 amp fuse by the motor. After correcting all that, it started up just fine. Spray a little of starting fluid in to help it start on the first crank. Too bad my starter just gave out on me. Hope that help. I'm new to boat but that's how i fixed my problem.

Spray a little of starting fluid in to help it start on the first crank.
Use the Force, I mean the choke. The choke is your friend, not starting fluid.

where is the choke? and how do you choke it?. i bought a battery a month ago and now the battery is bad. i took the bad battery to the shop and they gave me a new battery. still it crank but no start. when i turn the key to on it say 12.6 volts and when i turn the key to start the volt drops down to zero. pls check this in your boat and see if your voltage is dropping down to zero when you turn the key to start. i have checked the fuse on the engine and it okay. is there any other fuse i should check?

thanks

Though made by Merc for several years, Force were NEVER Mercs. The reason Force engines are covered in a different forum is because they are a different brand and different designs.

Re: 1995 120 force mercury outboard engine starting problem

hi? i worked on the boat today. i check the compression on the boat with the hand or finger technique . there was alot of power coming out of the engine. my finger was not a fit to withstand the force. i cleaned up all the terminals and i tried to start the boat but no luck. it crank/ turns but no start. when i check the spark plugs with a spark plug tester, the type of tester that hooks on to the park plug and to the cable from the coil with a bulb in the middle; there was no sign of spark because the bulb did not light up/flicker. i check all four spark plugs and there was no spark. what next should i do? i check the fuses under the steering wheel column and i found one burnt fuse. it was a 5. i replaced it but still it cranks but no start. How should i check if there is power at the coils or power going to or coming to the coils?

all great ideas are welcome. pls help
