My steering had froze up last fall. I have since then searched forums to get a good understanding of the problem. I have troubleshot it, and it is the cable. I removed the grease injection screw and have been spraying a penetrating oil on the ? piston? and in the hole and I have been able to get it to the point where I can turn the steering wheel fully in both directions. It is still hard to turn. I hope 1st, that someone can help me understand the make up of the cable. Is it one whole piece, or does the cable come out of the jacket? how is it attached to the thing with all the teeth under the helm and at the motor? please help.

so I have did some self educating since Ive posted, and I see that its a rack style steering and that I'm going to have to replace the old cable. I can not fiqure out how to loosen the large nut holding the cable to the motor. I have tried to turn it and the whole thing turns. I tried to hold the cable and I torn the cable sheath, but the nut has yet to turn... any Ideas?

most rack and pinion steering are assemblies. It is quite possible that you will need to buy the rack and cable as an assmbly.

With the nut frozen on the engine tube, you will need to spray penetrant liberally on the nut and let it soak. Then you will need to tighten the two nuts on either side of the clamp. With a stubborn cable nut, you will need to grab the tube with a visegrips or a pipe wrench. There is still the possibility that the threaded end will break off.

Any ideas on where i might be able to identify the type/model for replacement?

I don't think it matters. The engine end is standard and the rack comes with a shaft and probably mount too. Steering wheels are standard taper so yours can be re-used. You just need to measure the correct length. Follow guidelines in the catalog. Look up right here at iboats store to see if they have them.
