My 1995 70 hp Force idles great, but when I give it gas it dies . Sometimes I can choke it on & off by hand while slowly accelerating in gear on the water & keep it running roughly until I reach about 60% throttle , then from about 60% to full throttle it runs Great. Any clues?

Also what should the compression read for this motor?

Re: 1995 70hp Force problems

Welcome to iboats.

Compression was approx 135-145 when new.
Anything over 120 is fine, over 100 is marginal, as long as the cylinders are within 10 of each other.

Not sure what the accelleration problem is caused by, sounds like the intermediate fuel jet could be clogged. Or possibly timing linkage may be hanging up?? Hopefully someone else will chime in here to confirm.

I guess I would start with the cheap and easy stuff. Replace the fuel pump diaphram if it hasn't been done yet, install an inline fuel filter, and overhaul the carb. Should be able to get the fuel pump kit and carb gasket from a Mercury dealer for about $16. If you would need the whole carb repair kit, it runs about $55.

I would run seafoam thru the motor, replace the diaphragm in the fuel pump as roscoe said. Also what do your spark plugs look like?
