i just bought my boat about a month ago. it has a 5.0 engine with a mercruiser outdrive and thru hull exhaust. i have multiple questions regarding the performance of my boat.

1. my top speed that i have reached is only between 40-45mph with 2 people on board. i just feel that with this size engine that i should be able to go a lot faster.

2. it does have a thru hull exhaust, its sounds really pretty. but its not that loud. i wanted a loud power boat but my wife wanted a open bow family boat so this open bow crownline was the compromise. i want it louder. what can i do

1. yeah that sounds about right, you can reprop it but you will lose bottom end, depending on the overall condition of the boat theres a chance the boat is full of water, so if I were you I would go get it weighed, your boat dry is 3100lbs so figure out how much gas and a little fudge should be able to tell you how much water is in the hull, who knows it could be dry but its good to know.

2. almost all through hull exhaust systems have baffles, is yours full time or do you have a switch on the dash to send the exhaust through the outdrive? Removing the baffles is not difficult but it is not reversable so if you remove them you will have to replace exhaust pipe as a whole if it becomes to loud, simply locate the baffles in the exhaust, they are normally near the tips, I hknow people that have used dremel tools to remove them others use a chisel and needle nose pliers

Are you able to acheive the maximum RPM that your engine is rated for??? If you are over propped, hull has alge growth on it or the engine has performance problems, your maximum engine RPM can not be obtained and thus the top end speed will be reduced as well. A starting point for the max speed is knowing the maximum engine RPM's at wide open throttle (WOT) and what your engine is rated for. GPS speed will be a lot more accurate than the speed indicated on the speedometer, as speedometers are notoriously inaccurate.

The 5.0L engine with thru hull exhaust is not going to produce the deep throaty sound as that of a big block engine.

The maximum rpm that my boat is rated for is 4800. And I can reach that with 2-4 people wot on calm water.

The exhaust is thru hull full time. No captians call switch.

And if the engine matches the year of the boat it is pre-vortec/old style engine. So producing less prop hp than a 1996 vortec does. In reality your 45 with two people for a 3100lb boat with a big gas tank and gear is respectable. Also then is that gps speed or speedometer speed. If it is speedo, it might be a little agressive over actual.
