Have you ever seen a US Customs ocean boat dont know the boat brand but with 4-- 300 Suzukies it flys the say it wil reach 100 very quickly. I saw one at the boat dock in Anacortes that had escorted a cruiser in to the dock.

I haven't seen that one. I see mostly Coasties. We have pair of guys down here that get a little nutty with the speed thing for offshore boats though.

Both have triple 300's on 36-37 ft boats. (Wellcraft Scarab CC and a Yellowfin) They are stupid fast in comparison to the rest of the fleet, but I'd rather not have their gas bill at the end of the day. (although...I'll have to get on one of the two at least once for the experience...lol)

Sounds like most of you are boating in the ocean. I boat on the Mississippi in the midwest which I'm sure is nothing compared to the ocean current, waves, wind, traffiic, etc..

A lot of the boats mentioned are all nice n big boats. Probably little to big for the old, long, and yes you'll be suprised deep old Miss..

Sounds like a 20ft in the 2k to 3k weight range should be big & heavy enough for the Old Miss.. Any midwest guys on this form?

How about NE Ohio, we have Lake Erie and a host of Inland lakes.

In Big Water, even the larger glass boats get pounded. The unwritten rule on Erie is when she has any ripple going, most boats slow down, 18-22 mph tops.

I would think the MISS river doesn't kick like that.

Oregon and Washington are an interesting boating experience, because you get some of everything.

You have the Pacific which is obviously big and rough, the Columbia that goes between glass smooth and 5 ft rollers from ships and howling wind, Central Oregon where the wind blows you off the water about 3pm every day, and high mountain lakes that are pretty well protected from the wind.

So despite not being in Midwest, I'm sure we have boating situations similar in a form or fashion.

No boat is going to be able to pound through everything all the time. It will always come down to a balance between comfort and speed...you need to find the happy medium that suits you for the given conditions.

Given the conditions described by veilside, I would definitely be looking for a saltwater (big water) geared dual console.

Yeah sounds like the 17ft star would get banged around a lot in the old Miss. The river has very strong waves from other boater's which can be very frustrating.

I have run my 18' aluminum Starcraft twice on Lake Raystown here in PA. This lake is chiseled out of a mountain range so it is pretty well protected from the wind (which is awesome) however it is deep and narrow and people run some BIG boats on there. I was concerned about how my boat would handle the wakes from the big cruisers. It handled them fine and kept us pretty dry but we did get BEAT (like airborn). Fellow forum member aspeck boats primarily on Raystown and was tired of getting beat up in a bass boat. He picked up a Renken Seamaster which is a self-bailing dual console like I've mentioned. He's thrilled with it and his wife is much more willing to join him on the water now as well http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc437/tkmichael/Raystown/102_0890.jpg

the OP obviously needs a 16' Jupiter. the Starcraft brochure says it has a "whisper quiet ride soft as down". :p makes one wonder why they didn't include that feature in the bigger ones.

Hmm, they must have accidentally forgotten to add that feature to mine

Personally the most annoying aspect of this, is the confused seas that are caused when boaters waves are coming from several different directions.

With just a wind chop, or ocean swell (assuming there isn't a perpendicular wind swell) you can plan for your approach angle and therefore minimize it's impact and harshness.

Other boats wakes aren't going to kill or flip you, but they certainly get annoying. (at least you don't have the HUGE freighters and Naval ships that we get on the Columbia here)

FWIW I take my 16' SS all over the place on the Columbia (all the way to the mouth/bar), Willamette, Tillamook, Netarts, Newport, and Nehalem Bays. (and that's just since it was finished this year...lol)
