Im redoing a 68 I/O cuddy and called a local boat rebuilder and he strongly recomended the sea cast said it was a great thing toy use on a outboard transom.

do you not think that taking out that little bit of floatation foam will hurt anything ...I think it was there for more of a filler than anything ....and how much much more weight will that add to the back of the boat if I filled it with sea cast .....

I wouldn't worry about the flotation. I don't have a guess for you on the weight issue. Probably not a big deal.

cool ...according to my calculations I will need 13 gallons for a flat transom of that size....so I will order 15 to be on the safe side.....and should I run the bolts back through the holes for the motor ar should I re-drill them after it has cured.....

And now I need to figure out some sort of jig to put around the transom so I wont have any distortion from pouring it .....wow the thoughts that keep coming in my haed scare me ...but I know I can do this .....so far I have done all of this on my own and with the help of you guys ...

Clint,

Just read your thread. Nice work so far. Looks like you will get away nicely with just the transom work. A seacast transom will work great in your case. Keep the pics coming and keep up the great work.

Whew! 13 gallons adds 130 pounds to the transom. I guess there's not much of an option however.

I like the idea of seacast or nidabond (still about 95 lbs.) but could one insert a center core of plywood? By doing so you could lighten the load and use less of the compound...or is that just pie in the sky?

I have thought about the plywood core but the more I think about it ...I do not want there to be any wood back there to ever rot ...but the weight still concerns me a little .....

Also in this picture you can see how the outer skin is cracked along the bottom and sides of the motor mout ....what would be the best way to attack that for the repair...should I cut the inner skin out and repair from the inside or should I repair form the outside or both ...I was thinking about the inside repair with a few layers of mat and the the crack on the outside will be fillied in with peanut butter and then when the motor is mounted back I can seal the mount to the outer skin with silicone ...what are you guys thoughts on this ....

ok well I have been steadily workin on th is little beast and here is where I'm at so far .....

I reglassed the rear outer skin of the transom and got it all nice and smooth

then after many phone calls I decided to do a sea cast transom ...why instead of nida bond well the cost actually ...it was about 45.00 cheaper to do a sea cast ..the shipping from nida core was gonna be 200.00 and when I called their rep to speak to him about the product i felt like he was literally to busy for me. When I called sea cast I got to speak with the owner of the company and she was more than helpfull with me and even looked at the pictures of my boat and called me back and I was able to speak with the head of their in-house repair person ...all in all it was a great experince dealing with them ...and the shipping for their product from florida was only 88.00 Any way here are the pics of the transom after I poured it

and boy did it get hot

all in all it was a very straight forward mix...just follow the directions that they send you and you can't go wrong...
The transom is very very very solid now ...it has been curing for 3 days and this thing is solid
I have now got my first coat of prekote on and it's looking very good ...I am planning on trying to get the first coat of interlux brightside on later tonight

oh and if you dont have one of these ...you need to get one ...it makes lifting the cap off and on much easier

That brings everyone up to speed as to where im at as of today

and if anyone has any questions about the sea cast please feel free to ask ....it seems to be an amazing product

Just wondering why you're doing finish work before you've finished glassin,
the top of the seacast has to be sealed with cloth pushed into it, did you do that yet?

Seacast does give very good service, they drew up plans for me to make stringers from left over seacast and always responded to questions.

The nida people probably prefer to deal with boat mfgers as they make a bigger line of composite materials.

I used plywood cores in my seacast but only on the 2 side risers that are above water level.

why does it need to be cobered with cloth ....they never said that when I spoke with them ...but I did seal the top with Tiger hair wich is a long stranded filler ....I really do not want to pull the cap back off again unless I have no choice

Because its a core material, so it needs to be covered with glass and resin , its in the directions and they show it on the video.
I would ask them if its critical at this point. I used 3 inch wide glass tape, you are supposed to push it down the sides.
See the video. They show mat and cloth to seal the top. Approx 2/3rds through the video.
THe mat is tucked in between the original glass and the secast with a scraper blade,
the cloth goes over the seacast and onto the outside of the hull, then its sanded fair.

thats not good ...and I thought I had read all i could about it ...I iwll call them tomorrow and see what can be done....and after looking at the pictures on their website the fiberglass mat is used to ad stabilitly to stress points such as corners ...luckily I have no corners...is just a straight shot all the way across ...but either way I will call and see what they tell me ...thank you for bringing that point up ...

THere was only one known case of seacast failure, a guy made a bracket but didn't glass the outside.!

Anyway, your situation might be different because you didn't cut the top of the transom open.
Better to find out now, peace of mind and all that.

I have to admit it took time for me to warm up to a transom in a can. But after reading the posts in here and in other threads I have followed, it seems it does have its place. I don't think you can build a better case for using it than in this boat. I'm sure the fiberglass cap on top of the goop is going to be a minor issue. If required, you could cut channels down either side of the Seacast at the top and epoxy some cloth to the top of it. And I am sure if needed you could build in some protective rigidity in to the splashwell to compensate for the missing cap. Either way, I bet it's not a huge deal.

Good job, its going to be a nice boat.

thanks guys ..I talked to seacast and they said it would not be a problem since for the most part the inner and outer skin are realtivly rigid ..we will see ....I got everything put back together and all I can say is I am 230 pounds and can bounce on the lower unit and the front of the boat will start to lift off of the trailer with zero flex in the transome area...we were planning on taking her out for he first run but of all things it started to snow ....snow is rather rare out here in the desert...we had a high of 82 one day and I high of 22 the next ....go figure

I will post some pictures f the finished product as soon as it thaws out here ....I hate the cold!!!!!

Also the brightside paint is excellent to work with ...I layed 2 cotes of primer and 2 coates of brightside white and it looks amazing ....but you need to follow the directions to the letter with the drying times and sanding.....I am sure that it will look even better when I wet sand and polish it all out too
