I have a 1995 Crestliner 1750 Sportfish, VP 3.0 with the SX-SLT outdrive. I wanted to try another pitch prop on it. It had an alum Michigan wheel 15 dia 17 pitch when I bought it. Ran fine with it and felt like I was topping out at 4000 rpm. Trying to put a 4 blade alum Solas prop 14.75 dia and 21 pitch. Trying to get a little more speed out of it. Ran fine for the first 20 mins and we did a couple wot runs at 3800 rpm, then did a little more half throttle runs so the kids could drive the boat. After another 20-30 mins it started to smell hot and was smoking. Shut it down and left cover open to cool off. After I got home, I pulled water pump on engine and inspected impeller, everything was good. Used hose to back flush raw water hose from the lower unit. Looked good and a strong flow of water. Hooked up the muffs and ran it off the hose and checked a few other spots for flow. Nothing seemed to be lacking in flow. I looked at thermostat, didn’t seem bad but I am too impatient to test. After idling on the hose for 20 mins, I opened the block drain and the water coming out of there was very hot and a strong stream. I am sorry for the long winded ask, but trying to give all the back story on it to help get answers. I changed the oil this spring and it was recommended to use 30w synthetic, I don’t know what was used before me. I used 10w-30 full synthetic mobil one. Could it be the oil viscosity? The new prop straining the engine? Something? Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thank you.

Water coming out of the block after running would be hot.

When it was overheating, how hot did it get?

When running on the hose how hot did it get?

You might have picked up a plastic bag and when stopping it fell off

I noticed the temp gauge went to 220 and didn’t come down even at idle. I replaced the thermostat and new seals and gaskets, then it ran fine all morning into afternoon. Used boat to pull kids tubing and after an hour it started to overheat again. Not sure if the water stops coming in and pump starves? I am considering getting a 12v water pump and teeing it into the inlet, so when this happens again I can run it to try cool it down. Is it possible I got a bad thermostat, and it only worked for half the day?

Running on the hose, I ran it at idle and it got to the same temp and just climbed to 220 again. For a sportfish type of boat, it sure doesn’t like to be used for one!

Get a piece of clear hose, a barbed fitting and hose clamps from the hardware store. Remove the hose coming from the pump to the thermostat housing, and place clear hose inline with and connect to housing.

Your looking for bubbles while running in the water (not on a hose)

Alldodge, thanks for the advice. I will have to try it to at least see what is going on. I bought this boat as my “last” boat hopefully. But now it has me thinking the “break-out-another-thousand” philosophy is coming true to my situation. Just gets frustrating that when everything seems to be going good, then it just falls apart.

I would really like to know what you found out by switching the props. I have a 97 1750 sportfish same engine.
