1996 4 stroke Johnson 15hp

Hey everyone, just picked up this motor for a awesome deal. Now, I’m wondering if this is a susuki Block because of the partnership between susuki and Johnson when they wanted to build 4 strokes. Also some tips and tricks with the motor would be awesome! Motor works great, compression of 160 on both cylinders!

I do not believe the early ones were SUZUKI built.-----Later ones from 2001 on were.----I have a few for parts / repair as they are not the most popular on the hit parade.

160 compression it not normal for a Johnson block, but very common on susukis

The lower units / water pump on these are essentially the same as the OMC 2 stroke models.----Except for different spline for the crankshaft.-----Carburetor is a variation of the 2 strokes as well.

Looks good. I would try to locate a factory repair manual (maybe Ebay), change the engine oil and filter, change the lower unit oil and install a new impeller, maybe a set of plugs. The length between the top of your mounting board and the plate above the prop should be close to the transom of your boat.

I have a manual, and the fella before me changed the oils for me. I ran it today in a barrel and I had some gunk on the sides. Can someone tell me what it is….I’m thinking a carb clean needed

If it runs nice then just run it.------Black stuff like that will show up in a barrel.
