Can any one tell me why my Evinrude blows excessive amounts of white somke and deposit some much oil mix in test barrel? I have been using the correct oil amount 50:1. As indicated 3 ounces per gallon as required by type of oil. I have recently used premium fuel with Evinrude oil and sill to much smoke and slime in tank. What am I missing? I just don't know anymore. Thanks in advance!

Running in the test barrel always "seems" to produce more smoke because it has nowhere to go but up.

Have you done a decarb in a while? If not I'd run a heavy mix of seafoam and do a proper decarb. Have you changed the spark plugs in a while? I have noticed as my spark plugs age (or ignition system ages) there is more "slime" in the tank. This slime is usually unburnt oil, and even a healty pre-mix motor will leave some deposits.

Another scenario is if you have water leaking in from the head gasket into the combustion chamber. Check your compression. I be one cylinder is off. If it is, its time to change your head gasket and have the head milled flat. Has this motor ever overheated?

I would say normal as the motors never really gets warm enough in the barrel.

Get it on a boat and take it out and run it on the water and then see what happens.

agree. just needs clean up. If you're not ready for the lake yet, start with fresh water, clean up the leg as best you can, and run it some more. Keep the hose running. If you are trying to dial it in, there will be additional nasties in the water -- get it adjusted right, and it should run fairly clean ("clean" in context of a two-stroke).

sutor263, I have had the head gasket replaced and the compression is 125 on both cylinders. It does run okay at idle and when we are full throttle. Decarbing the cylinders I have not done but can you give me an idea on how this is done?

In the top secret files look under the heading decarbing motor. If you did not already know the top secret files is the first thread of the forum.

Some oils burn more completely than others also. Penzoil Marine XLF TC-W3 seems to result in less smoke than anything else I have tried.

if theres still way tooooo much smoke, and running kinda super rich, i.e. smoky pump your primer bulb if it dont get hard u may have a hole in your fuel pump.

This is a good suggestion, but I think that this only applies to motors using the VRO.

Run it in the rain! Ever get out on the lake real early while the mist is low? Old two stroke lays down a pretty good fog to go with the mist. Some of the fog is obviously heaviness of the air (exhaust hangs low), but I submit some of it is the engine cleaning itself out by drawing in the moist air.

Yea, this is a cool sight to see. I love that first thing in the morning cackly idle with a layer of dense smoke trailing behind you.

Ah, the smell of two-stroke in the air....:joyous:

(Hey vro -- rain or shine, think you just need to get out and run it some.)

The 48 HP models normally do not come with VRO.--------And a hole in the diaphragm of a regular pump will lead to flooding of one cylinder and a lot more smoke.

would be an easy fix or maintenance (pump diaphragm).

Says it's running well at idle and WOT -- Certainly could explain some smoke and debris too, if running only in a barrel. Pretty big motor for that.

Hey gents thanks for all the responses though I never thought a fuel pump diaphragm would cause so much smoke, so that makes sense. I will replace that diaphragm kit and get back to you all. That is correct about the VRO pump it does not have one! I will also check the Top Secret Files and replace primer bulb it need it anyway. You all are awesome best forum ever tks again! I will get back as soon as I can and keep you posted.

I dont know how hot it would be getting, I'm guessing just warm but not over heating warm to the touch when touching the head or block area. I probably should use a infrared temp gun to be exact on eng temp. How hot should these little engines get to run efficient and burn off that oil mix well or better for that matter?
