I removed the cover on my 1996 Evinrude motor to give it a quick inspection.

I found a round steel pin laying on the lower cover just below the carburetor. The pin is about 5/8" long and 1/8" diameter. Any ideas on where this pin belongs?

I used the motor a few hours before the inspection and everything seemed to be working fine.

Re: 1996 Evinrude 30 mystery part

Looks like a propellor shear pin to me. People will stow them just about anywhere so they have them when they need them. I have found them taped around tillers, taped to insides of covers, taped to handles on fuel tanks ...etc.

I am not sure 1996 used shear pins on the prop so someone will need to confirm.

i think '96 had rubber hubs, not shear pins. Looks almost like a roller bearing, but i doubt it is. Look around the carb linkage, maybe its part of the butterfly mechanism, on the opposite side from where the linkage connects. aka the port side of the carb.

Could be a shear pin for an electric trolling motor. People will put them in some strange places just have them if needed.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm pretty sure it's not a shear pin. I've owned the motor since it was new and have never put anything inside the motor cover.
There are wear marks in each end of the pin (object) which may indicate that the pin was some sort of pivot or hinge point.

Could iot be the locating dowel for the case halves? If it's got a taper to oneend, that could be it.

Look where the cases meet, both sides. see if it has 1 locating dowel or 2.

The pin I found doesn't have a taper. I checked for the dowels on my motor and can see the one on the top left of the case. It's larger in diameter than the part I found. I could not see enough of the right side of the case to tell if it has a dowel or not. Besides, the dowel I did see is covered with paint, so the part I found probably isn't a dowel. My part looks like it's maybe a shaft or axle. Thanks anyway.

I took the pin to our local Evinrude dealer and a mechanic there says it's a needle bearing. I'm in the process of removing the flywheel to take a look at the upper main bearing. What is the bolt size that fits the 3 threaded holes in the flywheel? I tried 5/16-18 bolts in my puller and can only screw them in a couple of turns. The threads in the holes don't appear to be fine thread.

The upper crank bearing needles are captured in the bearing. In order for a needle to come out it would have the break the bearing, work its way past the upper crank seal and get past the ign components and magnets in the flywheel.

Sounds like it's highly unlikely that the part is from the upper main.

Any ideas about where it could have come from?

I believe 5/16"-24 is the correct size! Be sure to use grade 8 bolts.

could possible have been floating around since new and finally worked it's way to freedom?

I'm out of guesses. It does resemble a roller bearing from the crankshaft, but you'd see a pretty large hole in the block.

Ya know, if you would throw that thing away and forget about it your problem would be solved.

I think you're right Daviet. I removed the flywheel and everything looked fine under it. I see what you're saying about the upper bearing and seal capturing the needle bearings. It would take a major explosion to get a needle bearing to come out through there. I'm going to quit worrying about it.

And thanks bankerjohn, 5/16-24 bolts are the correct size for the puller holes.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
