I have a 1996 175 hp Evinrude. After several minutes of use at high RPM my Hot Alarm signals and my motor automatically slows. The alarm clears in a few minutes. When I try to increase RPMs after the alarm clears, the motor shakes fairly violently like perhaps like it is missing badly. The coolant stream is flowing at a high rate. I have replaced the plugs, and the thermostats. Any suggestions?

Your SLOW mode is being activated by one of your sensors. A signal is being sent, be it correct or not that is activating your hot (possibly fuel restriction) alarm. Your repair may be as simple as a new water pump or a new temperature sensor. I hope it is. If not it can be a tail chaser to solve. You need to understand the warning system to diagnose it. Worse than that I have to recommend the OMC service manual for your particular engine. It is worth a million when chasing engine issues. I dizzy still from chasing after my alarm issues.

I believe the ignition must be turned off to clear the SLOW system, even if the motor is running cool.

Those motors have high water pressure when the water pumps are good. Perhaps your waterpump is marginal.

Thanks for all of the input. I have the service manual-I agree, worth its weight! I will check back once I check the pump and the sensors. Thanks again for the help and direction.
