I have a 1996 force 120. When I turn the ignition to start, the starter engages the flywheel, but doesn't seem to have enough power to turn the motor. Both batteries are brand new, I have cleaned and tightened all of the connections, but still no start. The ammeter drops to zero when the starter is engaged. The starter gets hot when I try to start the motor. I have been told that the only two things that will cause this are low batteries, or a bad connection. Can anyone give me any ideas?

I'm not a mechanic, but sounds like it could be the starter it self

I agree with Week end Boater.

If jumping directly from your battery to the starter hot lead wont start it either the engine is trying to sieze or you have a bad starter.

Good luck. :)

Make sure the flywheel will turn with the plugs out. Mine is clockwise other than that could be the starter however its a 96.

Try some marine brass battery terminals between the battery and the outboard cables.

Thank-you all for your advice. After trying all of these things, I finally took it in to the shop. The mechanic said that even with the plugs removed and a borescope tool, he couldn't tell what the problem is. Said everything he can see looks good. Will require further disassembly to determine the actual cause. thank you again, I'll post when I know the cause. :(
