i talked to a service rep that does marine outboards today and he said that with the mid 90's johnson/evinrudes there was a problem with the middle cylinder where the motor was running really hot.

That's true. Some were even re-jetted for cooler operation. It's a concern with all inline 3's. Normally, the plugs will look white during an overheat. When was the last time you changed the water pump? There are upgraded kits for your motor, if it has not been done already. Your dealer should know about these service bulletins and give you the correct pump kit if you do it yourself..Also, make sure your overheat warning horn is working properly. If it did indeed get that hot, your horn should have sounded. On the back of the motor head, there is a single tan wire going to the temp. sensor. Disconnect the wire at the bullet connector and with the ignition in the ON position(Not running), ground the wire coming from the remote. Your horn should sound. If not, find out why....
