Basically, you are screwed! Once the casing cracks, the threaded circle that holds in the spool will not be adequately tight. IF the crack extends far enough to reach the gear case, then water will get in.
The crack MIGHT be able to be welded, but for the 100 bucks you will spend there, you are better off looking for a good used gear case. Gears and bearings are shimmed into the case and if you can not measure accurately the only SURE cure is to buy a good used, complete lower unit.
