I just bought a 96 merc 200 hp efi it had been used very little out once last year and not out this year.Fill fuel tank up and added oil to oil tank.Put in new start battery and engine started but ran rought for about 5 min. boat came up on
plane and run normal for about 20 min then lost
power. The engine idals normal maybe a little rought and put out lots of smoke.I added merc
injection cleaner and have ran the motor about
30 min in the lake. it has came up on plane once or twice more and will then lose power.compression checks about 115 and all the same and all cylinders are firing.2 week befor any shop can get to it. also changed the fuel filer.

Sounds to my like a Fuel problem. After reading your fixits, I would check the fuel pumps and lines for obstructions(bad gas globs). Post results and we will go from there.

Check your manual...I believe you need a 1000 CCA battery for that engine...if not it plays havoc with the computer.

Another thing...when you turn the key to ON...can you hear your fuel pump?

TMD

yes you can hear the full pump start running
then will stop after about 10 sec.
Not sure if it is 1000cca battery but it is new
and the big marine battery they had at that time
I will check and make sure it is correct
thanks for the advice

Re: 1996 merc 200 efi loss power

kmiller,

I also have a Mercury EFI. Mine is a 225 hp and a 1998 model. I have experienced similar problems in the past. In my situation, I had replaced fuel lines, filter, bulb, spark plugs and various other items. But, with the problem you are describing I would suggest that you first take a close look at a fuel sample directly from the bottom of the tank (after the boat has sat still for a couple of hours). Look for water or discoloration of the gas, anything out of the ordinary. If the gas appears normal, the likely culprit is more than likely a clogged fuel injector. Good luck, hope this helps. Let me know how things turn out.

I bet your plugs are fouled. I fouled some in my 97 225 EFI last weekend. It is very difficult when you pull the plugs to tell if the cyl is missing or not.

I had a high spped miss on mine a few weeks ago. I connected a timing light to each cyl. , run the motor at 4000 RPM's and see which one was missing.
I found a marginal CDM (coil) on 1 cyl.

jmvaughn,
What did you actually experience that made you change all of the fuel system items ?

From what I have read elsewhere, these EFI's are good motors.

Dave

It might be a good idea to check your timing. Then again, it also does sound like a fuel problem. Consider replacing your fuel pump diaphram.

Re: 1996 merc 200 efi loss power

I know my 3.0 225 is slightly different than your 2.5 200. I believe there were problems with the high speed fuel pumps.

I recently had my high speed fuel pump rebuilt by a mechanic friend. He was helpin me with my missing problem and that is the first thing he replaced.

Parts are $15.00, cheap in boating terms.

Re: 1996 merc 200 efi loss power

Here is what I originally encountered with my motor:

1998 Mercury 225 EFI

Engine would not plane out when under load. The boat seemed to idle fine. Yet, when I would begin to accelerate for a hole shot the boat would reach 2000 to 2200 RPMs and be unable to rise past this range. When the problems were starting I tried pumping the bulb and choking the engine (neither worked). My fishing partner could go and stand on the front of the boat and after struggling the motor would pick on up out of the hole and run fine (5400 RPM WOT, 76 MPH on GPS).

I checked the engine compression and got a reading of about 120 per cylinder of uniform rating. I replaced the plug wires, fuel bulb, fuel line and fuel filter as a first step. The shops in my area are also very busy and I needed the boat for a tournament. No luck with step one.

I then checked the vent line for any obstructions and drained the gas tank to check for water.

I borrowed a known good Ignition CDM from my local repair center. This didn't help either.

After sending the boat to a local repair facility and having the reed valves checked, fuel pressure and bleed line and vapor tank, they discovered that several of the fuel injectors were clogged. They did not need to be replaced, but were cleaned.

The boat runs great now. The total repair bill was under three hundred. This included another new set of plugs.

So, with the problems your encountering being so similar. It probably wouldn't hurt to go ahead and have the fuel injectors cleaned. Also, have the engine scopped. If it has not been run in awhile, there is the chance that the cylinder walls could be rusty. I was always told that the best way to keep an outboard running was to leave it running and motors that have set up for awhile tend not to run correctly.

Hope all of this helps.

Good Luck

Re: 1996 merc 200 efi loss power

I have a 96 Efi that had the same problem. Bogged on the hole shot, smoked and used alot of gas. I had mine in 2 shops for a total of 6 weeks with no fix so I ordered a book and started doing tests myself. I found that the detonation control was telling the efi computer it was sensing detonation (even at an idle) and to go full rich and retard the timing. You might want to at least take a look at it. Good Luck! Gary
