1996 mercuiser 4.3 does not idle slow only quickly when engaged

I have a 1996 4.3 Mercuiser with Alpha one outdrive. When I engage it to go forward it moves pretty fast not a slow idle take off. Is this a fairly easy fix by a mechanic or something not ot mess with. I kind of got the hang of guideing it in but would much rather have the ability to bring it in with an easy pace rather than bringing it in rather a quick take off.

Depends , carbd (2 or 4 barrel)or injected. There should be a idle adjustment.

I will have to look at it. It is not really idle I used the wrong word. When I engage the forward gear it takes off fast rather than a slow motion. I guess if it was car it is kind of like going from a dead stop to 2nd gear.

Ayuh,... If the motor is idling at 650/ 700rpms, you have to get used to bumping it into, 'n outa gear to go Extremely slow....

It sounds like you need to put a little more tension on the throttle cable,this is done by moving the barrel nut that holds the cable to the mounting bracket on the engine
