Having just started going over the boat I just bought, a 1996 295 Pro XL Stratos, I`m a bit stumped. There were no batteries in the boat when I got it.

I`m fully aware of how to get 24 Volts out of the two new Trojan Group 31 batteries, but I`m unsure of the wiring in the boat. The previous owner was abviously (Or maybe not) just running the motor on 12 volts as only two of the four wires were being used. (Others were taped up) And, that`s the question. There are two 6G red wires and two 6G black wires running up to the trolling motor, as I mentioned, two, (one red and one black) are not being used. Do I run both together, both black to the negative side of 24V and the two reds to the Pos side of 24V????

There is no switch on the trolling motor that says 12V or 24V.?????????????????????????

Do you have a switch panel at the bow of the boat where the trolling motor receptacle is located? You need to determine whether or not you have a 12V, 24V, or 12/24V motor. A 55# thrust motor is more than likely 12V only since 55# is at the top of the 12V range. I suspect the boat was originally wired for 12/24V operation but that a 24V motor was never installed. Since you apparently have two trolling motor batteries, do not use the second set of wires. Just jumper POS on one battery to POS on the other, and NEG on one battery and NEG on the other. This puts the two batteries in PARALLEL which still provides 12V but doubles the run time. Or you could just continue to use one battery. You could install a battery switch that allows you switch between them if you wish to use two. All of this is moot if you indeed have a 24V motor. Then both sets of wires are used (one pair to each battery). The series connection is made at a switch panel at the bow of the boat or at the foot control. Keep us posted and we will get it right for you.

After closer inspection, [it is a 24V motor only] and thinking on it all night! I have come to the opinion that it is set up to use 24 volts with just one set of wires. There was no jumper wire anywhere, but that`s no problem. I`ll give it a shot, thanks for the input.

If you have a 24V motor, here is a schematic on how to wire it using just one of the two pairs of wires. You need a short jumper between the two batteries to get the series connection. If you have a dual bank charger, it can be connected as shown. If not, just ignore the charger connections.

Yep, and that is exactly how it is, charger and all. He actually had a 10G wire connecting the two for 24 volts, I found it under closer inspection. It now has a 6G.

All wiring repairs done today, still hasn`t been wet yet.
