Boat: 1996 Skeeter , with 1996 Mariner 115hp.

Recently serviced with lower unit gear lube replaced.

Problem: Took boat out on lake, at approx 35mph, beeping alarm came on, and will not quit. Alarm comes from where throttle box is, and light above RPM gauge blinks in concert with beeping alarm. Beep, pause, Beep, pause Beep and so forth.

I looked at oil level, it was low, but not too low. I added oil to reservoir, and topped it off. Beeping continues, even when you just stick key into ignition and turn to right.

Any ideas, temp?, short in wire/circuit? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Under the oil tank on the motor you will find two blue wires that go to the alarm module.

Unplug the wires and test the switch that is inside the bottom of the tank with an ohm's meter.

You may find that the switch is closed, due to the magnetic ring on the oil level float coming un-glued from the float, falling onto the magnetic switch, causing the alarm module to think you are almost out of oil.

You may leave the switch un-plugged and operate the craft IF you are absolutely religious about keeping the oil tank filled. The oil alarm will stay dis-abled while un-plugged.

Unfortunately the float is not repairable, you will have to replace the oil tank.

My suggestion, fix the beeper. I have a 150 Merc sitting on the back of my old boat because the heat buzzer failed to work, got hot seized up. Usually the broken beep is from the low oil sender and a steady buzzer if from over heat. Save yourself some possible money later and fix it or have it fixed. Good luck. What kind of motor is on it.

Sorry I missed the Mariener part. I also have a Marinier on my Skeeter. It is a 225 Super Mag. It has a little oil tank on the front of the motor under the cowl, that the motor actually runs from. If it gets low the buzzer will come on also. Mine is a racing engine and I am not sure if all Mariners have this setup or not. If yours does, and the little oil tank is low. It is pressure filled from the pump. Just, while the engine is running, loosen the cap a small bit, until the tank fills up. If you losen it to much, it will blow oil everywhere when it is full. Just food for thought. Good luck.

Re: 1996 skeeter beeping alarm

The difference in Mercury/Mariner is like the difference in a Chevy/GMC Truck, just different color cover and decals.

The oil/temp alarm module/system on the 115 inline 4 and the V-6's is the same except for the oil tanks.

The I4 uses only one engine mounted tank that has a relatively high failure rate on the adhesive that USED to be used on the oil level float within the tank. This float is not usually repairable.

The V-6's use a smaller auxiliary/reserve engine mounted tank with the sensor in the tank cap.

Un-plugging the oil level sensor will not have any effect on the function of the temp sensor or alarm, it will still alarm when the temp sensor heats up, grounding the circuit and the module will alarm with a solid tone.

Test the temp module circuit with the key ON, ground the temp sensor lead, the alarm should beep solidly.

Test the oil module circuit by connecting the two blue wire together, with the key ON, the alarm should give a rapid beeping.

Test the temp sensor(s) by heating in a shallow pan of water while connected to an Ohm's Meter, continuity should reduce right around 180 degrees, indicating enough continuity for the module to register and alarm.
