Quick question (ok three), I just finished up my first (for me) water pump replacement on my L115GLEDC looper using the Sierra kit I bought, and all seemed to match the old one but the new impeller blades are wider than the old one (which is clearly toast). I’m using completely new cup, housing, everything from the Sierra kit but it looks to me that with the 4 bolts torqued the impeller blades are just wider than the cup, such that I worry about the watertight seal at the housing to wear plate. I dare not over-torque into the aluminum. Do I need to worry about this seal? Will it all settle in once run and just assemble perfect as to instructions and don’t worry? It’s subtle, but I worry the impeller’s so wide it’s forcing a weak seal.

My second question is that my OMC factory manual said to coat the outside of the cup with gasket sealer before installing it in the housing, no idea why….I did it though. The old one certainly wasn’t done like that. Any ideas? I was “hopefully” careful enough not to get any built up in the air bleed hole….

Thirdly, Sierra kit had an extra (third) round o-ring that I can’t find a use for?

Other than that I OMC gasket sealered the main gasket, greased the o-ring and key on the drive shaft, and used permatex 1-A (as alternative to OMC type-M) on the two o-rings in the housing (including the big odd shaped one with the seal I am worried about above)….did I miss anything?

Haven’t put the lower end back yet or run it…..

Try inserting something thin between the cover and wear plate. Sound's like there might be a gap between cover and wear plate. There is a key protruding from the top of the cup that must match the slot in the cover. Otherwise if the impeller is installed with the fins going in the right direction and the impeller key fit properly, I'd say good to go. Did you replace the grommet in the part of the cover that accepts the water tube?

We're on the same wavelength, I did exactly that..I delicately inserted a razor blade and it goes in, gets hung up around the o-ring such that I suspect the o-ring is touching but it surely ain't squished tight. I follow your discussion of the key, definitely in the right spot as I'd be out by more than I am if it weren't. I fins are right direction, impeller key is in (any way to turn the prop and note that impeller turns short of starting the motor and looking at tell-tale?).....and yes I replaced the tapered rubber sleeve from the kit that accepts the water tube - that what you mean?

Take a close look at the bottom of the pump housing.-----------------Likely there is nothing wrong and it only " looks wrong " to the first timer.

Try pouring water into the water tube port to see if any comes out from under the housing. Post the part number of the kit.

I will try the water pouring idea, Sierra 18-33152 Water Pump Kit, my motor is 1996 L115GLEDC. Any idea why OMC manual says to coat the top side of the impeller cup (which goes inside the housing) with gasket sealer? I did it....but wondered....

Thanks for the ideas guys.....

I had no luck matching , Sierra 18-33152 Water Pump Kit, to 1996 L115GLEDC.

Well that doesn't worry me too much, the parts are essentially identical to what came off, and when I look up the OMC kit part number I get for that motor it is 5001595 and Sierra 18-33152 is listed as replacing 5001595 here (http://www.boatersland.com/sie18-33152.html).....

The way the housing is made will lead you to believe that it is not down properly.--Examine parts closely.
