1996 Wellcraft Excel 18' any good?

I was considering buying a 1996 Wellcraft Excel 18' bowrider with an Mercruiser I/O 4 cylinder as my first boat. I know that this model has been discontinued. Should I stay away from discontinued boat models? I know Wellcraft is a decent name, but the Excel has been discontinued. Thanks for any information.

Just because a boat was discontinued doesn't mean anything. If I were you I would have the boat surveyed or at least looked at by someone who is familiar with boats. If all is well go for it!

I have a 23' outboard Wellcraft and love it.<br /><br />On the Mercruiser, have someone check the manifolds and risers as they should be replaced every 5-6 years especially if salt water cooled.

This boat was all fresh water use, so I guess I could go longer on the risers and manifold,right?

I have been happy with my 1994 Excel 20-SL. I think it is well built boat. I wouldn't worry about Wellcraft dropping the Excel model, just as it didn't bother me that Nissan discontinued the Z-car for a while. The company is still going strong there in Minnesota, dontcha know.<br /><br />That 4 cylinder is probably OK, but make sure is is enough for your needs.<br /><br />Ya sure, you betcha.

Paul -<br /><br />I have a 1997 Wellcraft Excel 175ssx. It's a 17 footer with a 190HP Volvo Penta. This was also my first power boat and I love it. If you plan on keeping the boat in for the season, be sure to paint the bottom.<br /><br />-Chuck
