My powerhead has to be rebuilt. I took it to the shop and they said it would be $5,500+. I checked a few other shops and all of them were over $5,000.
Is their anyway that i could do it myself. I have not worked on outboards before but am a good auto mechanic.

Check around for a rebuilt powerhead.I found site a long time ago that sold rebuilt powerheads for cheap.Look around.
Doing it yourself can be real hard. That depends on the condition of the cylinders and pistons.
What happened that you need to rebuild? Most rebuilds are caused by something: cheap oil ,no oil clogged heads etc.First figure out why it went bad.
I rebuilt a 225Johnson.It wasn't cooling right on the left bank. The salt had built up under the thermo seal and wouldn't function correct. J

1996 xr2 200 hp

Are you sure on year/hp as a Xr2 is a 150hp
What happened to your engine? If it is a 1996 200 it should be a 2.5 liter and a reman with 1 yr warranty is $4500

While i was loading boat onto trailer it maid some clanking sound and lost power so i shut it down. I took it to the shop and thay said the middle cylinder on right side had lost pressure so he opened it up and said that cylinder had to be rebuilt. With the age of the motor he said he would not recomend fixing just that cylinder. He also said that he did not see any obvious reason for the problem. He said it was probably just from lots of hrs.
I have the owners manual it is a 1996 200 hp xr2 2.0 L it is the offshore racing addition. It only weighs 350 lbs.full throttle rpm range 6000-7000.

If you have a 1990's 200 xr2 2.0 you have a exported motor. These are pretty
sought after in the states. You could probably sell it and have enough for a
good 2.4 or 2.5l merc. Go over to S&F forum there's probably more people
over there that are familiar with this motor. I've never seen one, only read
about them.
The only time I ever see posts on these motors are from people from Europe,
New Zealand, and Australia.
Like I said go over to S&F, T-REX or some other 2.0L guru can probably
help you with it.
