Re: 1997 Evinrude 25hp problems

No it wouldn't but with it staying open if your water pump or thermostat had failed your alarm would never had gone off. The black/white wire is for the Quick Start the Tan/Blue is for over heating. If the Tan/Blue was closing either early or closed permanently it would have caused what you described. I thinking you have a short in the harness unfortunately you are going to have to through it in the water to find it. Follow the steps in my previous post. If the engine goes into SLOW mode with the connector unplug the power pack is bad if it doesn't then you know you have an issue with the wiring.

Any warning lights associated with SLOW mode?

Over Heat and no oil. If your problem is in the engine harness it might not be enough to illuminate the warning lights or set off the warning horn. I had that issue I actually had to cut the tan/yellow wire at the 4 wire connector going into the power pack. My old power pack was causing misfires replaced it with a new one and the engine went right into SLOW mode with no warning lights or alarms. I unplug the connector and the engine ran great that is when I started looking for shorts and couldn't find any. I finally cut the tan/yellow wire and that cured my issue. I unplug the temp sensor and it made no difference, then I decided to cut the wire tan/yellow wire since my oil tank was already disconnected and that wire is strictly for the no oil warning system.

Where in Ontario are you from?

Re: 1997 Evinrude 25hp problems

I'm from Milton, just outside of Toronto if you're not familiar with the area.
So my story continues. Went out today. I unplugged the temperature sensor right away and gave it a try. Everything ran smooth for few minutes, we tried full speed, stop and full speed. Checked the engine temp by touching and sprinkling some water, didn't seem to be hotter than any other time. Then another bigger boat crossed in front of us and created a bigger wave than I thought. As we went through it boat took a drop and then lost power. The engine didn't stall. After that I couldn't get it to full speed. Checked each cylinder for spark just by unplugging each wire and they were ok. This seemed to be different from the other issue. Just to be sure i did unplug the 4wire connector from the power pack, made no difference. At this point I had to return home since it was getting late. It seemed like the engine put out full power for like a second and then it would only get up to 3000rpm.

What spark plugs are in this motor?

I don't know if I ran it long enough before I hit that wave. I'm going to check the wiring and the carbs for any debris or anything else.

Make sure your battery connections are also good and tight and corrosion free. I think you have an electrical issue and it can be very frustrating. Good luck.

Re: 1997 Evinrude 25hp problems

Last night I took apart every electrical connection I could find and cleaned it all. I also took apart the fuel pumps, found nothing wrong. I decided to take the carbs apart as well. What I found was that the bottom carb wasn't bolted on as tight as the other two. I think i might have forgotten to torque it. I took them all apart and cleaned them again. Replaced the temperature sensor.
Took the boat out this morning for about 2 hours. Ran it full speed non stop for 30 minutes and it ran good. I hope that this is it.
