1997 Force 50 HP voltage regulator

I bought a aftermarket voltage regulator for my 1997 Force 50hp and the wires coming out of it are 1-red, 2 yellows, & 1- black, on my old regulator I have 1-red, 2-yellows, & 1-gray. I know where every wire goes except the black. does it go to the gray wire? the regulator is one I seen on here (Universal Regulator/Rectifier 01-154-16) that someone else used on there 1997 50 HP & it worked great. Just not sure if I need to hook the black to the gray or not? all the other wire colors match.

Yes, the black wire hooks up to the gray wire which is the negative terminal or ground.

No. Except if you use this aftermarket unit the black wire goes to negative or ground while the red goes to the positive of the battery ckt. The gray wire now has to be connected to one of the yellow wires as signal input to the tach.

When I did mine, it was a matter of luck. But if it doesn't work on the first yellow wire it should work on the second. And same thing happened in my case, I have to switch it over to the second yellow wire. It's still a puzzle why this is but hey, it works so I just left it alone and charge it to experience.

This is similar to your case and it could help you better. Again, the gray wire was connected to one of the yellow wires to provide input signal to the tach. As mentioned, it is a draw of luck which yellow wire will work for the tach.

Changed regulator everything working good now. 14.2v at battery while motor is running!!! Thanks for every ones help!!!!!
