What to look for?
First all 1 st time poster, and new member, but have lurked around a while. I m new to boating and have bought a used motor thats starting to feel more like a used anchor.
I have had it completey serviced prior to addding it to a 24 ft pontoon. The mechanic at the time saw metal shavings and warned about what could be in the future.. Well its already happening...
2-3 times it didn't want to go into gear... but did...and now I am noticing a knock when driving.. I have read on here and my mechanic confirmed the DOG and gears are going bad and jumping in and out of gear. he gave me a few options to fix this problem... The problem is , this is getting expensive.. ha.. I have looked around for lower units in hopes to buy one cheaper than replacing new gears...
All that for this... Are lower units interchangeable.. I am sure ALL are not... But is there a year range or HP range that I can replace with current lower unit.. For example.. I found a 50 hp Force year 2002... with a good lower unit.. Can I use this? Where can I go to find out what can be used or what to look for?
I know my mechanic should know... but wanted a second opinion and plus the mechanic is not cheap.. Im lookig at different options.. thanks..
