Let's see .Port thermostat is stuck open?I can't even come up with a useful suggestion at all unless you can be more specific about the performance issue you are describing.Acting up?Please click on and read the suggestions for new posters. The quality of help you are able to get is in direct relation to the specific info you provide.Remember ,we can't see or touch your engine.

Not trying to be hard on you ,just trying to help you get the best help you can get.

i bought the boat from an old timer don't have a lot of history boat runs great when you get past the sputtering ? it really seems to smoke a lot maybe the oil is heavy not sure how to adjust the mixture ? i guess more oil is better than not enough!!

I doubt that you are dropping fire on a cylinder at idle but picking it up at higher speeds. I'd say your idle circuit in one or more carbs is dirty.

The engine starts to die when you put it in gear and try to throttle up.
-----------------------------------------------

Remove and clean carbs and use a rebuild kit for each. You will need Carb cleaner, compressed air from some source and a rebuild kit.

You don't know the history of the motor.
--------------------------------------------

Remove and clean the carbs as mentioned above, drain the lower unit fluid and check it for signs of water in the lube. Refill if OK. Use fresh gas, if it has been sitting for more than 3 months. Replace the water pump, pronto. Put new spark plugs in it. More oil is NOT better. It may be causing the problem you are having now. You may be fouling a spark plug at low speed or idle by having the mixture too rich with oil. 50:1 is the recommended mix. That is 1 pint of TC-W3 outboard oil per 6 gallons of gas. No more, no less.

Lastly, please get a Manual that will guide you through all this with our help. Being new to these motors can be daunting and destructive if the proper maintenence is not followed.

No offence intended at all. These are just some of the things that need to be taken care of before you hit the water. We all have to do them at one time or another. If you have any more questions or need a source for parts, just ask. Meanwhile, try to order a good Manual from the link below:

Factory Manual
