Quick question folks,

My unit is leaking out of the top seal. I can live with a small leak but this one is quite large. As many others have posted, the top pin is impossible to get out. Three straight days of PB Blaster, heat and hammering have not gotton it out. That said, the bottom rod came out with ease. My question is if I can get the cylinder cap to unscrew, I assume it is possible to remove the unit with the ram still attached to the engine bracket, rebuild with new seals, and insert back into the unit? Any insight you can offer would be appreciated. thanks,
Maury

I've never done it that way and I always got the top pin out. What kind of heat are you using ?? If you think your method will work, try it.

only propane - two torches, one on each side. I assume I need to go hotter but I don't have the setup. Of course, the one errant swing that hit my thumb has put a damper on my efforts..... :)

it should work. Be careful not to wallow out the spanner holes and don't overtighten the cap causing future problems. You'll want to work over a large pan or bucket since there will be a lot of mess. You'll also want to completely remove the manual release and let the fluid drain out. When reassembling take care not to let debris into system. And, of course, never ever use silicone or gasket compound on hydraulics.

Thank you gentlemen. Mission accomplished. O-ring kit came in yesterday. Picked up a 1/4" pin wrench from the local Grainger. Removal an rebuild was a snap. Left the ram in the motor housing and pulled the assembly off. Piston nut came off and I didn't loose any springs or ball bearings from the piston. She works like a champ and no leaks.

My recommendation to anyone doing this job is get out whichever pin is the easiest to remove. Reassembally is not an issue whichever way you go.

Thanks again,
