I have a 1997 Johnson (on 15 Whaler) that has run great, but starting bogging out of the hole and on turns while pulling skiers, but would then re-catch and go. It became more pronounced, so we chnged fuel filter and it seemed to go away. Then it came back worse to where the boat wouldn't plane at all. So we tried a new filter again with fresh gas and it still bogged eveb without skiiers. Then I noticed that I could get it to pick up rpm's by pushing in the ignition choke switch. It ran for a couple minutes then died. I also noticed a fuel slick around the engine when I paddled back to the dock, but thought this may be excess gas from flooding. Any ideas?

Sounds like it is time to rebuild the carbs. Oops sorry I almost forgot, welcome to iboats. Process is pretty simple especially if you get an OEM manual. Kits are pretty cheap. Around 24-30 bucks. Buying the manual will pay for itself in one hours shop time charge.

Well, why would it wind up and run right when I pusshed the choke in? After it srtopped last night, I tried it this evening and it cranked right up.

Can anybody give me anything more specific than rebuilding the carbs, based on the symptoms?

When you hit your choke/primer switch you changed you fuel/air ratio and it went from starving for fuel to a richer mixture. If it is starving you may have a jet plugged up with some crud. You may have an air leak in your fuel hose at a connector too but I would bet on the carb(s) first. Especially if they haven't had anything done to them in a few years.

You motor doesn't have a choke its a primer. This is basically a little pump that squirts fuel into the carb behind the throttle butterfly. This system works much better than a choke. This is the reason it would run better, it was pumping extra fuel into the motor that the plugged carbs could not do.
