Just purchased a 21'6" skeeter bay pro with a 1997 merc 150. The motor runs perfect. Idles real good and purrs like a kitten. The vin # tag has been removed so Im not sure if it IS 1997 or not. I did compression check and got about 100psi on each. Anyway at WOT I am over 6000rpm and going 46 mph. It has a power tech 21 pitch. DO I need to get 23 or 25 pitch or get a better brand prop like tempest. I think I should only be spinning 5500 at WOT. Also is there anything I need to do to the motor for general maintenance or to check it out thoroughly like de carb it or clean the carbs. Or should I leave it alone?? It sounds really good to me and I dont want to mess up such a great running motor.

Here is the spec's from the factory manual for your motor:

110 ? 135 psi
(753.3 ? 924.5 kPa)
Variance between cylinders should not
exceed 15 psi (102.7 kPa)

100lbs is fine on this motor..that the cylinders are even is more important.. just sold a 150 with the same numbers and ran perfectly...Step up to a 23pitch..you will lose a little in the hole shot however bring the rpm.s down...hopefully you won't lose much speed if any since you are stepping up in pitch...The 6000 doesn't scare me...I spin a 200h.p to 6200 all last summer with no issues..oil injection is gone, mixing 40 to 1 with semip-syn oil..fresh fuel...no problems to date...good luck

The general rule of thumb is that each pitch differential will increase/decrease by 250-300 rpms. The only way to tell for sure is to sea trial until the correct rpm is reached.

Thanks for all the replies. I will check to see if I can find s/n this weekend (boat is in storage). Also when I took it out in rough water the motor was shaking really bad like it was goin to fall off. The transom bolts are on good, its not that. Its the actual motor itself shaking up and down. Is there motor mounts or some sort of gasket that keeps the motor from shaking. Is there some bolts I can try to tighten?? Its fine in calm water, but when rough that sucker is scary. Also should I decarb the motor and clean the carbs, or just take her out and let her ride!!! FYI I owned johnson before this and nothing but trouble. I am so glad to have a merc now!!! Cant wait to enjoy her!!
