I've been struggling for a while now with a motor that ran well but bounced around a bit at idle. I took up to my mechanic and everything passed with flying colors except the drop test. Pulling number 4 had no effect on the motor. #4 had spark. Not dropping out. Thinking it was a fuel delivery problem. Checked float level, etc. then started messing with the idle mixture. He finally got it to run better by backing the screws out 7 turns. Started looking for air leaks and found 5 out of the 6 carburetors had cracks between the side cover and the mounting flange.
My mechanic says he sees cracked carb quite regularly. Is this a common failure? With new going $500+ each, what are the odds of finding a good used set?
