Im turing my spx into a stripe bass fishing machine. My only concern is hydro locking the motor when i am anchored on the river. I will be doing dome fishing on the hudson river with it. its a large fairly fast movign river. I plan on anchoring and fishing from there. Will the current force water in the intake grate and eventually into the cylinders and hydro lock the motor?

Dont think so but if you have reverse and engage it that should lessen the chance.

jet ski fishing machine!

I posted this in the jet ski section without any luck. I thought I would try here due to more eyes seeing it.

This is the website of the master. Very friendly guy and I'm sure will be glad to discuss with you. He goes way offshore but mostly fishes the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, which has ripping currents, too.

Others, check this guy out. Amazing. and a great photographer, conservationist and fisherman.

I would be surprized if the current had that effect on that wave runner. It would take some serious current to force the water up into the exhaust ports of the motor. I doubt you would be able to hold bottom with an anchor, under those type of currents.

Well, they say you have to be careful when towing a jetski over 5mph or so due to the engine not running and causing water-intrusion. I don't think the river would have quite that much current, but you never know.

Yea I'm not sure. The intake grate is designed to force water up into the the engine then out through the exhaust. I know towing a ski will hydro lock it. I don't see why a river wouldn't? It's water moving under the hull

A river isn't fast enough to do it, you need AT LEAST 10 mph to get enough pressure built to force it through the intake tubes. You can test if yourself though, just get a buddy with a boat to anchor beside you, and then pull the line off the back side of the head and see if there is any water coming through.

I'm curious though, why a spx? (other than its what you have...) SPX hulls are some of the least stable platforms out there. Great fun, but they are a tried and true racing hull. Stability is NOT their strong point.

finally, some rare spx's got reverse, and it isn't too hard to retrofit from a gsx. If you do have reverse, just drop it into reverse after you anchor. This will reduce the water going through the pump.

Hey Bob! This SPX's first voyage was on Lake St. Catherine! Im sure your familiar with that lake. Im sorry for posting it twice but i didnt get many responces on the PWC thread so i wanted to move it to this one so more poeple would see it. I couldnt figure out how to move the thread so i just reposted it here. I will go back and delete the PWC thread if its still there.

Im using a SPX hull because its all I have. I got it for $450 with a trailer. The only thing wrong with it was no paper work, and a broken steering cable. $50 for the cable and a little work and i have a nice running machine. I will give this a try and see how it goes. if i like it i may sell my Crestliner and buy a more family freindly bowrider and buy a bigger more stable jet ski. Although im not sure a jetski can replace a boat for those cold days rainy days trolling for trout.
