On our 1998 35hp 3cyl Evinrude the motor leaks down when tilted up. I tried to take the bypass screw out and replace the O-rings but it is too tight and buggered up to remove!! Does anyone have a method of removing the bypass screw when it is in this condition?????

There is a circlip that has to be removed before the screw comes out.

Remove the circlip and then try an impact driver with the proper bit in it.

Thanks for the response, I saw the clip to remove in order to take the bypass valve out but first I must get it to move at all. I'm not sure how much pressure to put on it with an impact driver as the casing is quite expensive. Any ideas on how to loosen it?

I may be wrong but i think boobie is referring to an Impact Screwdriver and NOT an impact gun/drll

Try to use an impact driver that you hit with a hammer.----A must have item for any one working on motors.

Still can't remove the bypass valve, it will not unscrew, seems to be too tight. I did use an impact screwdriver and smacked it hard with a big hammer. All I'm doing is further mess up the screwdriver slot. Does anyone have an idea on how to unscrew this bypass valve? I am assuming these are right hand threads right?

Get a Mapp gas torch and try some heat on it.

Thanks boobie, that will be my next move. I have a propane torch I use for copper pipe work. Applying heat has always done well on problems getting steel and cast iron parts freed up, I have never done this with aluminum. Gotta be careful not to apply too much heat, that would be disastrous.
