My outboard will not turn over. Last time I was on the water I noticed my fuel guage showed empty, but was full. I turned on and off but no change.Engine stopped and would not turn over. Finally I turned the ignition and it started in neutral. In the past I could not start the engine with throttle in forward or reverse with button pushed in. When I returned home I was able to turn engine over a few times, I pushed key in to choke and now engine will not turn over. There is a clicking noise coming from the engine compartment when I try to start. The choke is also activating but the engine won't turn over.Could this be a faulty ignition switch? Or something to do with the safety switch in the throttle?:(

Probably 95% of all starter problems is electrical. Is the battery fully charged? Check all your connections. They must be very clean and tight. Check the lugs very closely for any signs of corrosion. They can corrode inside where you can't see it and cause the problem you are having. If you know how to do a voltage drop test you could check them that way. Another way would be to temporally substitute the cables with jumper cables. If all the cables have been confirmed good, try jumping the starter solenoid. Just because it clicks does NOT mean its good. If you are sure the solenoid is good have your battery load tested, regardless of age. This brings you to the starter itself. Remove it and have it tested by your local auto electric shop. They can rebuild it for you if needed and save you some money. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the reply, The battery is new, but I will check everything as you suggest. I will let you know when I find the problem.

Found It! you were right just because the solenoid clicks doesn't mean it is good. After checking all connections, voltages and power to both the small and large terminals on the solenoid and jumping the starter by bypassing the solenoid. My helper and I discovered we had a reading across both large terminals with the key in start position and run position. We dismantled the solenoid and discovered the contact disc had come off the small shaft and was across the two main contacts. It had overheated and melted the solenoid body and then shifted sideways opening the circuit. Case closed.
