I was changing the lower unit oil and when I drained the oil there was very little oil in lower unit (maybe like 5 to 6 ounces of oil) it was charcoal black. I then dropped lower unit to see if there was any oil around the impeller housing and there was none.there was some sand round the housing but none in it and impeller looked fine. Is it possible that the oil can leak out without any water entering the system? Thanks for the help !

It is possible that someone either did not fill it properly or forgot to fill it at all. Usually, if oil can get out, water can get in.

Fill it correctly and then for at least a couple of runs, check it after every day's running.

Yes it is possible not very likely but possible.
If the lower gets hot it can push the oil out and as it cools it usually draws water back in.
But it could suck in some air in the right conditions.
Do a pressure and vacuum test. That might show if there is a problem??

Thanks for the help guys. But I found my problem. While refilling the lower unit i found that I took the retainer pin screw out and not the drain plug! definite epic fail. Now having done that does the retainer pin just go back in or does it have to line up with something in the lower unit.
