I just bought a 1994 bass boat and it has a 1998 blackmax 150 mercury on it. The boat was not well taken car of but the price was right.
The lower unit leaks oil from the lower drain screw plug, and the oil was white in color. I drained what was left and am not sure what oil to refill with or how much. The drain screw didn?t have a seal/gasket on it so I?m thinking that is why it was leaking.
Also it has some nicks in the leading edge of the aluminum casing in front of the screw and it looks like there is a small hole a couple inches up from the bottom, is that supposed to be there or is that a hole letting water into the gear oil?

thanks

Welcome to iBoats....

The small hole is a pitot for the speedometer. So yes, it should be there. I use Mercury High Performance gear oil in all lower units.

You pull the uppr vent plug and insert the lower unit lub from the bottom. When it comes out the vent it's full. Get the $3.00 pump at any auto store.

One trick missed here is to let about an ounce spill when you put the lower plug in. You need a little bit of headroom for expansion. Use new plug gaskets EVERY TIME.
