Boat is 1998 21' CC Striper with a 1998 Evinrude Ocean Pro 175 HP (non ficht) engine with 430 hours
Took the boat to OBX and she ran great. Had a period of about 6 weeks with no use and when I got out again she started the day by running great, and then the problem surfaced. She started to "sputter and hesitate (like it was falling on its face)" and would not get above 2000rpms which meant max speed was about 8 mph.

Figuring I had a fuel issue, I limped back to the dock and changed the water fuel sperator, added some fresh gas, sea foam, and changed the spark plugs. Test ran it again yesterday and the "sputter" was gone, but she still will not get above 2,000 rpms when under a load as in the water (engine will go above 2,000 rpms when in neutral so no throttle linkage problem.) Additionally, I have gotten a check engine alarm on one of the many attempts to throttle up that cleared once I shut it down and restarted it.

There seems to be improvement in idle smoothness but it does seem to be idleing lower than it usually does (500 rpms as opposed about 600-650 rpms). I had a problem which I though was similar about a year ago and it was fixed with the addition of the water fuel seperator. As a result I focused on that (since it was 30 hours past due to be changed) and did not check or clean the fuel filter (which is reusuable screen for this model). Last year it was fine, so my tunnel vision took me to back to the water fuel seperator issue.

My Thoughts: I am hoping it is the easiest fix and that would be some debris on the fuel filter. Of course I know it could be a carb issue, vacuum leak, timing, or god forbid a compression issue.

Any thoughts or direction would be very appreciated.

Start with the simple things first, compression and spark tests.
If they are OK then proceed to the fuel system.

OK

Will get a compression guage and ck timing for starts. I did pull and clean the fuel filter as it did have some small debris in it, but engine no fix.

Forget timing right now, check the spark at the plug wire ends with a spark checker.

Re: 1998 Evinrude 175 without power

Startred up the engine and ran it to warm it up to perform the compression check and the compression through all 6 cylinders is 75 psi. However, when checking spark, I have found that I have no spark to the port side cylinders. Forgive me as I am trying to find the numbers in the service manual so not sure if that is (1-3)(1,3,5) etc...but hopefully I have described it acurately enough. So an iginition problem of some kind seems to be the culprit?

A little more information

A little more information

After a little more checking and rechecking, I did discover that the shift switch is not aligned properly. When taken out of the bracket and manually pushed, the engine runs great. I put it back in the cradle and it worked once, before going back to the current state of misaligned. Nothing appears broken (I see no broken plastic). Is there a trick to aligning or are there worn parts I should look to replace?
