1998 Evinrude E130 alarmed and went to "slow" mode

My normally wonderful E130 performed well most of the morning but started to have some "rev limiter" type problems. I think the heat alarm went off and the motor went into "slow" mode. Thankfully I was inshore when it happened I could not go over 3700 RPM or rev limiter kicked in, cruised in to dock at 7mph max for an hour at that speed. Got home and washed down and water coming out of water spitter was hot, any suggestions for repair? PS water spitter was working fine all day, checked flow when it went in to slow mode.

Repair the usual suspects. First rebuild waterpump. Next test thermostats, or just replase them. That should get it....

after it cools down see if it will run normally. i keep one of these on my boat, incase, so i know for sure.
