Any idea what the petals are made from? I've edited the pic to the correct orientation and circled where it appears to me that the petal has torn away. Would they do that? My reed valve stop plates have the holes in them and I'm thinking I shouldn't be able to see these holes from the inside if the petal was still there. The remaining petals looked good. At least what I could tell from the camera. I've ordered two valves, just in case I have another one that is bad. Never hurts to have a spare, I guess. I'll post pics of when I get the carbs and valves off. Thanks again for all the help.

Yup, that looks like two petals are missing, at least. To give you a better idea, I've included a Reed V Block pic. Petals are mounted on the V-Block ( a set of 2). To be ready, you will need replacement gaskets for the carb and also for the intake adapter.

After removing the V block, using a flashlight inspect and clean the crankshaft cavity for any parts of the reed that was torn off, if any. When replacing the petals, make sure you use loctite on the screws that holds them.

Note on the pic, the petals are very shiny stainless (?) material. Do not confuse the reflection of the petal stopper ( metal parts with holes) as part of the petals. Just making sure. The stopper prevents the petals from over extending which can cause it not to close properly anymore or worse yet breaks. And yes, after awhile of flapping back and forth, it eventually breaks.

Pull the carbs and the reeds. As you can see from the pic, I was missing one. Found two more that had small chips out of them. Not causing issues, but needed to be changed. Inspected crankshaft cavity over and over and even put my bore camera in as far as I could. There was no sign of the missing petal parts. Got me a little concerned. Is this something that is going to bite me in the a$$ later or is there any chance it got chewed up and is no longer a threat. Don't know enough about outboards, so that's why I'm asking. Anyway, everything put back together. Started right up on muffs. Gas longer spitting out front of top carb and already idles better than before. Taking to lake this weekend to set idle and see what she does. Pic attached of missing petal.

Once again, thanks a bunch for all the input and assistance.

The missing petal is probably all chewed up. If you cannot find it, then it's gone. Well, you did great and thank you for posting the successful endeavor updates. Enjoy.
