You need a maintenance manual then follow the procedures for doing a link & sync. It must be done in the steps given.

I have looked at severat manuals online, can you recomend one.
I was hoping someone could tell me what the steps to setting the timing are, but I am not against purchasing a manual.
Thanks,

Is there a reason you need to check the timing? I say that because timing on anything made in the last 30 years or so doesn't really change or become out of adjustment without someone fiddling with it.

Most have a sticker with the timing printed on it someplace on the motor.

Mercury factory service manual is best.

Clymer Force repair manual is next.

Seloc manual is not worth the paper it is printed on in my opinion.

30 degrees. 5000rpm full throttle opening. I have the same motor.

If you are static timing I have heard you need to adjust this by 2 degrees. Can not remember if you need to add it or subtract it from 30 degrees. I need to check the timing on mine soon and would appreciate some input.

I set the timing on the water last time but I found the experience a bit too exciting for my liking to want to do it again.

Re: 1998 75hp Force by Mercury Marine

I have the same motor. I tuned mine for the first time last year. I purchased an online manual (Force Outboards 1984-99.pdf) at the time. Possibly not the best manual but I found enough there to get the job done.

I used the settings from the stickers on the motor. 30 degrees at full throttle but followed the procedure from the link at the top of the Force forum titled ?Synchronizing Carbs and timing on a 75-150 Chrysler or early Force? written by Frank Acampora . It completely change the way my motor runs. I went from a motor that stalled at idle when you could least afford it to a very reliable smooth running engine. It took me 6 months to get used to it being reliable at idle. I was seriously thinking of selling the motor as I had some close calls as a result of the motor cutting out.

Thanks Frank! :)

Take your time and follow the steps and hopefully you get the same result I did.

Good Luck
