I just picked up a 1998 14' pontoon with a 25hp motor. The boat has been sitting for 4 years, so, first thing I did was remove the carb to clean and replace gaskets. After reassembly the motor fired up pretty quickly but would bog down and smoke real bad too. The only way to get it to idle with any consistency was to turn the idle mixture screw to the fully seated position. Although it does run well, I know something can't be right because it (mixture screw} should be somewhere closer to 1-1/2 turns out. What should I be looking at to correct this problem?

Did you service the manual primer assembly including the ball and spring? Did you check the electric primer make sure it is not stuck? Did you mess with the float level? How did you clean.it? Did you replace the needle ?

1. Did not do ball, but, spring was in the gasket kit
2. I'll check that
3. Did not adjust float
4. Carb cleaner and air hose
5. Did not replace needle

Just wanted to post an update to what I found. I removed the flywheel to check to see if there was any evidence of mice since there was a nest and chewed wires under the engine cover. What I found was a sheared woodruff key and worn flywheel, so timing had to be off. I replaced flywheel with a used one, and now all is good. now my next question in in regards to the "idle wire adjustment". I can not remove the free-play to the trigger by using the adjustment screw on the throttle lever. Do I just bend the wire to get it closer?

What idle wire adjustment? Put up a pic of what you.are talking about. A 98 model should have the trigger held in.place and not move at all.

The boat is a '98, but, the motor is actually a '99. The idle wire connects the fast idle lever to the trigger to advance spark
