I have 98 Merc 4-Stroke. The engine really starts hard. I've looked all over the engine to try and find a choke but there isn't one. I can sometimes get her to start by placing my hand over the intake and choking it that way. But why isn't there some kind of a pull choke?
I talked to a salesman at the local boat store and he says that there has to be some kind of choke on it. Either the pull type or its electric.
I've looked all over this engine for some where to hook in a battery. Can't find it. However there is a electrical box on the one side of the engine that has a cover on it that says not to remove without first removing battery. There are electrical wires that run to like the pilot light on the top of the engine and the shut switches.
Now back to the fact that there is no place that I'm seeing to hook in a battery and that it has no electric starter on the engine.
I've looked at parts manuals on the net for my engine and they all show parts for both manual and electric start. So, I'm not sure what i really should be looking for.
Its really frustrating getting the boat in the water and having to pull her back out 20 min later because she won't start. So if anyone has any suggestions that I might try or how to find out for sure if this is a manual or was an electric start and someone took the electrical components off. I believe I am the ND owner.
The numbers on the engine are SN 0H016166 Model # 9.9MA 4ST
Thanks
Nick
